Samedi 19/09 - "Comment va votre femme ?" - "Bien." - "Et votre femme ?" - "Elle a eu un petit rhume, mais elle va mieux..." (Iznogoud)

Référence au cultissime Iznogoud (la BD, pas le film), et jeu de mot sur Henri VIII, qui changeait de femme comme de chemise, juste un peu plus violemment... Aujourd'hui, visite de la Tour de Londres !

Réveil trop tôt (8h), puis métro (qui miraculeusement n'est pas en travaux) jusqu'à Tower of London. Pas de queue aux guichets. J'achète l'audio-guide ; la vendeuse croit que je ne comprends pas un mot à ce qu'elle dit, après que j'aie montré mon incompréhension devant un seul mot...

Pour re-situer, la Tour de Londres est construite au XIXe siècle par Guillaume le Conquérant, qui veut assurer ses positions après avoir conquis l'Angleterre (il est Normand). Ses descendants gouvernent encore le Royaume-Uni (devinez de qui je parle).

Des armes de siège sont exposées un peu partout, une catapulte, des tas de canons... Petit passage par l'exposition sur la torture (je deviens trop sensible pour ça) avant d'aller voir les célèbres corbeaux. Ils sont gras et bien lustrés, ce qui prouve qu'ils sont bien nourris. Heureusement, car selon la légende, si ils venaient à quitter la Tour ou à mourir, l'Angleterre tomberait (ou presque).

Ensuite, je passe par une reconstitution des appartements d'Édouard Ier, puis des salles qui ont servi de prisons, faciles à reconnaitre aux graffitis gravés dans la pierre par les prisonniers.

Après le repas, je croise un peu par hasard une mise en scène de la condamnation de la deuxième femme d'Henri VIII, Anne Boleyn, jouée dans les jardins entourant le donjon, que je trouve originale et instructive. Puis c'est la tant attendue visite des Joyaux de la Couronne, que je ne photographierai pas (interdit). Je note les portes très épaisses fermant la salle aux trésors, ouvertes pour laisser entrer les touristes. Ensuite, je me rends au donjon, la Tour Blanche, où toute photo est proscrite. Se trouve une exposition dédiée aux armures d'Henri VIII (qui a commencé son règne il y a 500 ans pile). On voit comment le personnage forcit au fil des années et des armures. Je traverse une chapelle Normande (de la construction du château, donc), simple, mais imposante, je l'aime bien.

En sortant, je rejoint une visite organisée par une garde (ils se relaient pour la faire). Il nous emmène dans une chapelle. Pendant un moment, je redoute le moment où il nous annoncera le début de la messe (moi et ma malédiction ^^). Mais non, il explique l'histoire de la chapelle, et de ses principaux occupants (une reine et deux saints, si j'ai bien compris son anglais véloce).

Pour finir (parce que ça commence à faire long pour moi aussi), je visite deux tours-prisons, dont la Tour Sanglante (Bloody Tower) qui tire son nom de l'assassinat plus que probable de deux jeunes princes héritiers d'Edouard IV par leur oncle. Leurs fantômes rôdent encore, ainsi que celui d'Anne Boleyn et de tous les exécutés de la Tour.
